Arsenal 4 – 1 Wigan: Our Great Escape is still on

Screen shot 2013-05-15 at 00.48.15

Arsenal 4 – 1 Wigan
Match Report | Highlights | Arsene’s reaction

One win from completing a redemptive rally…
There was no ‘Great Escape’ for Wigan, but there may yet be one for Arsenal.

Arsenal now know that a win at Newcastle on Sunday will confirm our top four spot. Considering where we were languishing after losing to Spurs a couple of months back, it’s a hell of a turnaround.

I think we’re all agreed that qualifying for the Champions League will never replace the ecstasy of winning a trophy. However, it would enable us to put a conciliatory gloss on what’s otherwise been a painful season.

What’s more, it would allow us to laugh at Tottenham. Again.

Theo Walcott was at the races…
…and when Theo is racing, no-one is going to catch him. Walcott’s critics occasionally accuse him of self-interest; they say he plays to please himself rather than the team. If that’s the case, Theo plainly really doesn’t want to play in the Europa League, as from the first minute to the last he hared up and down the pitch like a man possessed.

I prefer to think this performance was a consequence of Walcott’s continued maturation in to one of the side’s senior figures.

His stats this season are quite incredible. In just 30 starts he has now amassed 22 goals and 15 assists. You will struggle to find a wide player with more impressive numbers in world football.

Wojciech Szczesny won’t have been pleased about Wigan’s equaliser…
…especially because anyone who’d seen Maloney’s identical goal against QPR knew exactly what the Scotsman would do. It was a fantastic strike but Szczesny ought to have anticipated where Maloney would look to place it. In his defence, the goalkeeper would point to Lukas Podolski’s failure to jump in the wall. Speaking of whom…

I’m not convinced about Poldi at centre-forward…
Despite his two goals tonight I would favour an instant recall for Olivier Giroud for the game at Newcastle. There’s no doubting Podolski is an outstanding finisher, but he doesn’t yet share Giroud’s ability to link the play. He may develop those attributes in time, but time is not on our side. At several points in the game I was baffled by Podolski’s reluctance to burst in to the box to meet crosses from either flank.

He may wear the number nine on his shirt, but he’s far happier as a number ten.

Kieran Gibbs learnt from Gael Clichy’s mistakes…
The former Arsenal full-back was given a torrid time by Callum McManaman at Wembley on Saturday. In this match, Arsene opted for Gibbs over Monreal to cope with the tricky winger, and the youngster coped admirably.

He was coached through the game by Steve Bould, who regularly passed on advice to Gibbs from the touch-line. It paid dividends, as McManaman was mostly subdued. Gibbs’ positional play and anticipation were as good as I’ve seen him produce.

Aaron Ramsey’s goal was thoroughly deserved…
Ramsey’s season is in some respects a microcosm of Arsenal’s own: a dreadful first-half followed by a spirited and encouraging return to form.

This wasn’t his best game – his passing was occasionally wayward – but it’s impossible not to admire his sheer energy.

I ought to mention Santi…
…simply because it would be remiss not to. Four assists in one game is some feat. The Premier League is lucky to be graced by a player of his outrageous ability.

I stayed to applaud Wigan off…
I wasn’t alone. The Arsenal fans gave a rousing ovation to Shaun Maloney and a warm farewell to the Lactics, and I don’t think it was borne out of pity. It saddens me to lose a side as attractive as Wigan from a Premier League still containing the likes of Sunderland, Norwich and Stoke.

For half an hour of this match, before fatigue and familiar errors set in, they had us on the ropes. However, ultimately this season has proved an escape too far.

Bye-bye Bacary?
When the players departed on their awkwardly titled ‘Lap of Appreciation’, Bacary Sagna traipsed behind, accompanied by two of his children and dishing out lingering waves to the crowd. It doesn’t take a genius to decode the message: this may well have been Sagna’s final Emirates appearance.

If he does leave, he ought to remembered as a fine player and a tremendous servant. Some of his performances this season have been below par, but then how many players suffer two broken legs in their career and return to their previous level?

i’ll be more than happy to see sagna leave…he did serve us well and after two leg breaks, he lost some pace and confidence, also his crosses are the worst i’ve seen from any full back. hope we get pizseck from dortmund to replace him.

Theo was a monster tonight and the kos ninja interception is the best i’ve seen in my life. Lastly Ramsey should be our DM from next season…

Add Fulham to the list of dross that still remains in the league! Gotta feel for the Latics but ultimately they flirted with relegation a bit too much and finally got “picked up.” Rambo gave Joel “the eyes” before smashing the ball into the net! Good for him…

It was on at 4:30am here in Australia, so I couldn’t watch it had a big day today up early. But normally my daughter wakes up for a feed at 4ish so if she did it last night and I woke up enough then i would watch it, she slept through! Waking up in morning after not watching game, the first I do is check score. That few minutes when i grab phone, unlock it, site is loading up takes forever and I get so nervous then I see score 4-1 but need to double and triple check (sleepy eyes). Now I am done for the day I can go home and watch the game!
Just one more game to go and we safe!

always read you blog gilberto usually agree with most of your views but Giroud has no link u play. He has done it this season but sporadically so. His link up play could be worse then Bendter.

I’ve been wanting to write a player review for some time… by analyzing each player in detail and give a final verdict on whether he needs to stay or leave. I have 3 verdicts based on Gunnerblog’s verdicts given a couple of years ago.

As You Were: The player played with the Arsenal quality, and should continue progressing to become a star at the club.

Shape Up: Drastic improvement is required to stay at the club from this player in different aspects of the game to become the player the club needs.

Ship Out: The player isn’t good enough and must be sold.

    GOALKEEPERS
    Name: Wojciech Szczesny
    Age: 23
    Status: 1st choice GK
Positives: Is decent and has a lot of potential. Good in diving and also in penalties. Seems committed to the club.
Negatives: Too egoistic and inexperienced. Makes elementary mistakes because of no real competition.
What I’d like: It’s apparent that Szczesny needs better coaching and he also needs an experienced, professional goalkeeping partner like Reina or Julio Cesar. This will inspire him to advance to the next level. He does have it in him to be Arsenal’s undisputed No. 1 goalie with some fine tuning. His ego and media manners need attention, too.
Possible future: I’m pretty sure that there is going to be a keeper signing, though it won’t be a professional and experienced one. It would probably be a replacement for Fabianski, and I feel that Szczesny will revert to his inconsistent self.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Lukas Fabianski
    Age: 28
    Status: 2nd choice GK
Positives: Performed well in the last couple of years. He also provided good cover-up for Szczesny in most of the second half of the season.
Negatives: Wants to leave and should no doubt get his wish. Is hugely unreliable and clearly doesn’t have his heart at the club.
What I’d like: As mentioned above, I’d prefer if he was sold and replaced by a professional and experienced goalie. It would be better if he was dropped to 3rd choice and an experienced keeper came to replace Mannone, but that won’t really happen.
Possible future: He’ll most likely be sold, though the replacement keeper won’t be up to it.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    Name: Vito Mannone
    Age: 25
    Status: 3rd choice GK
Positives: Performs ok and is acceptable for a 3rd choice GK.
Negatives: Doesn’t look like he’s progressing, and I’d rather hand a talented youngster the 3rd choice GK role than him. It’s a thoroughly unlikely scenario that he’ll beat off competition from Szczesny to get first-team action.
What I’d like: For him to be sold, and a keeper with genuine talent to take his place.
Possible future: Though he’ll possibly stay, it’s hard to see him in the Arsenal history books.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    DEFENDERS
    Name: Bacary Sagna
    Age: 30
    Status: 1st choice RB
Positives: Has a lot of experience in the Premier League and was also the best RB in Europe at one point of time. He has respect and dignity for the club and has been a loyal servant for it.
Negatives: Poor forward forays by the Frenchman coupled with a disastrous season seems to suggest that his best days are behind him, possibly due to the injuries. With the emergence of Jenkinson, it seems his time at Arsenal is up.
What I’d like: Though his poor form along with his refusal to sign a new contract suggests he’s destined to leave, I’d actually try to keep him for another season. I’m not really sure that Jenkinson has it in him to replace Sagna so quickly, and considering that he has been in the club since 2007ish, I feel we should hold on to him for another year. Also, I feel that Sagna will improve if Wenger finally allows Bould to impress his tactics upon the team. Plus, he’s French!
Possible future: I’m near certain that he will be sold, PSG being his likely destination. Jenkinson will assume first-team RB, unless the replacement for Sagna is better than him.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Carl Jenkinson
    Age: 21
    Status: 2nd choice RB.
Positives: A likeable and honest guy, who hugely impressed at the start of the season. He might become first choice RB come next season because of Sagna’s inevitable departure.
Negatives: Too inexperienced (and possibly inconsistent) to fit into Sagna’s shoes. I have major doubts over him replicating the rock-solid performances of Sagna.
What I’d like: I have a fear that he will stagnate if he’s given the first choice RB role so quickly and is not coached properly. However, if he performs like he did in this season consistently, I see no reason for him not to have a future at the club.
Possible future: After Sagna’s imminent departure, there is a huge chance that he’s going to get the nod for first-team action, though I have doubts over his capability.
    My verdict: As You Were.

    Name: Thomas Vermaelen
    Age: 28
Status: Club captain (apparently), currently 3rd choice CB
Positives: An aggressive defender who had a brilliant start to his Arsenal career. Communicated well and was an important figure in the back-four. Signed a long-term contract at the start of the season, apparently showing his commitment.
Negatives: Regressed every season (possibly due to poor coaching and/or Wenger poor man management) and was simply pathetic this season. It appears to me that Wenger destroyed his confidence and then made him the captain, increasing pressure on him. Desperately needs better coaching and a purple patch.
What I’d like: While there is some speculation of him leaving, I’d prefer keeping him in the team. After better coaching and better man management from Wenger, I’m sure that his form will improve. Looking at his aggressive mentality and forward forays, I have a weird theory that he might make a good DM. This might mean that Arteta can play a more advanced role, possibly be a substitute for Cazorla.
Possible future: I don’t think he’ll regain his initial form unless there is an improvement in coaching.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Per Mertesacker
    Age: 29
    Status: 1st choice CB
Positives: Has experience and a towering height which helps in set-pieces (apparently). Decides to play it safe by staying behind while Vermaelen/Koscielny charge forward. A decent player on paper.
Negatives: Didn’t bring the goods required- which was experience, leadership, calm and heading ability. It’s astounding how a defender as good as Mertesacker fell prey to poor coaching. I’m not sure if he never adjusted to the Premier League, or he panics and makes elementary mistakes, or if it’s lousy man management all over again, but he never delivered the qualities that he was bought for in the first place. This guy NEEDS some coaching.
What I’d like: His leadership qualities, calm authority and his height must be used to his full advantage. I still believe that he has a future at the club, but for that he needs to be less panicky and more composed.
Possible future: He’ll stay on, and hardly progress at the club.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Laurent Koscielny
    Age: 27
    Status: 2nd choice CB
Positives: A decent run of form has seen him overtake Vermaelen for the top spot. On his day he is reliable and also keeps quick forwards like Messi and Torres in check. Had a brilliant second season for the club, possibly played second best to van Persie.
Negatives: Error prone and screws up in big matches like in Birmingham and Chelsea. With better coaching he can be a much better defender. Why the hell is the ‘Steve Bould effect’ having NO effect? Has Wenger overpowered him like he did to Pat Rice?
What I’d like: I’d like Wenger to admit he knows little about coaching, and give Bould a free rein so that he can help defenders like Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Miquel progress and take players like Jenkinson, Gibbs and Monreal to the next level. Wenger, for the sake of the club, should stop being such a control freak. Koscielny can perform consistently at the higher level if he’s shown the right path.
Possible future: Maybe same as what will happen to Mertesacker, but he might progress more.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Sebastien Squillaci
    Age: 33
Status: 5th choice CB (Behind Miquel)
Positives: Provided experience to the team which might’ve lead to Djourou fine form at 2010/11 season.
Negatives: Horrendous playing from the Frenchman (consistently, may I add) has resulted in the player being surplus to requirements. Arsenal, desperate to sell, can’t even find a suitor. Can’t believe that we paid 4m for this drab.
What I’d like: This player is beyond repair, so I’d like him to leave. Now.
Possible future: He has no future.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    Name: Johan Djourou
    Age: 26
Status: CB, on loan at Hannover 96
Positives: Had a breakthrough 2010/11 season and progressed well that year.
Negatives: Due to poor set-piece defending and the probability of him beating the likes of Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen being very low, his time at the club seems done. His slow and inconsistent playing (after 2010/11 season) might be put down to poor coaching, few opportunities and low confidence. Besides, he eats up too much of the wage budget.
What I’d like: Though I still think that he has potential to be a decent defender, his chances of making it big at Arsenal are slim to none. Again, poor coaching is the culprit here.
Possible future: Wenger will look to let him go, and I think he’ll be a reliable defender at a mid-table club.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    Name: Kieran Gibbs
    Age: 24
    Status: 1st choice LB
Positives: Stood up to the challenge and gave Monreal a run for his money. He is turning out to be a very reliable defender and a vital cog in the Arsenal back line. Turning out to be a key player and an apt replacement for Clichy. Please don’t screw him up, Wenger.
Negatives: Too injury prone and makes mistakes (although not much in recent performances). However, Wenger seems to have solved that problem, bringing stiff competition and an able replacement in Nacho Monreal.
What I’d like: Gibbs has been playing nicely for the club and the arrival of Monreal has reduced the burden on him. Watching the competition of Gibbs and Monreal is much better than Gibbs and Andre Santos. I’d love it if Gibbs stays at the club for years to come.
Possible future: The competition for first full back position between the two might result in the Englishman edging out. Don’t see him leaving anytime soon.
    My verdict: As You Were.

    Name: Nacho Monreal
    Age: 27
    Status: 2nd choice LB
Positives: Competition for places brings out the best in players, as it has done for Monreal. With both LB’s in fine form, it’s hard to say who is the first choice full back of the club. Monreal is proving to be a decent signing, and should continue his progress, unless of course, Wenger’s lousy man management intervenes.
Negatives: To early to deduce any.
What I’d like: Whatever’s going on is good enough for me. However, I fear that he might regress like what happened to Vermaelen.
Possible future: Will provide competition for Gibbs, though I feel that Gibbs will win the battle for first team action.
    My verdict: As You Were.

    Name: Andre Santos
    Age: 30
Status: LB, on loan at Gremio FC
Positives: Good going forward, and has nice dribbling skills.
Negatives: Arsenal’s worst LB in 6 years, Santos was definitely a panic buy. A total waste of 4m, Santos panics and lunges for the ball, usually completely missing it. His infamous reputation was fuelled after he swapped shirts with van Persie. Dud.
What I’d like: One word. LEAVE.
Possible future:His only chance for a future at Arsenal is if Wenger decides playing him as an LM, but let’s face it, even if that happens, there is a slim chance that he’ll make it big at that position.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    MIDFIELDERS
    Name: Mikel Arteta
    Age: 31
Status: Club (vice) captain, 1st choice CDM
Positives: Hugely influential and keeps the game ticking, providing accurate passes to his teammates. His experience seems to be helping, and his errors are far lesser. See what buying an experienced, established Premier League midfielder gets you?
Negatives: Too safe at times. Why Wenger is playing a CAM in a much more deeper role is admittedly baffling. Arteta SHOULD be given an advanced role, before his good years go behind him. He can offer much more to the club in an attacking position.
What I’d like: It would be great if Arteta would play substitute to Cazorla, and a capable CDM like M’Vila was bought. That way, the team would be a more potent attacking threat and a better defensive unit. Everybody wins.
Possible future: Wenger will continue overplaying him in a position where he offers little. There is a plausibility that he’ll leave if Arsenal miss out on Champions League next season.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Abou Diaby
    Age: 27
    Status: 2nd choice DM
Positives: Impeding and stamps his authority on the game when on form. Has a certain Vieira presence in him.
Negatives: The very definition of ‘injury prone’. The amount of faith in Wenger is admirable but frankly, stupid. Even when fit, Diaby has a tendency to slow down the game, as opposed to the Arsenal ‘style’. Also, his temper have cost the team the game on many occasions. The nine month injury shows that it’s certainly the end of the road for him. I can’t believe that we could have got 10m for him 2 months ago.
What I’d like: Though I think that he’s an hardworking guy wanting to play football and not a lazy loser eating up the wage budget, it’s best for him and the club if he’s let go.
Possible future: Wenger will keep him for another season and then finally concede defeat.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    Name: Aaron Ramsey
    Age: 23
    Status: 3rd choice DM
Positives: His work-rate and stamina and commitment to the club is amazing. Kudos to him for bouncing back after being Shawcrossed. While giving him a much more defensive role is risky, he seems to be benefiting.
Negatives: His passes were way too defensive this season, as opposed to way too offensive last season. His risky mentality of wanting to ‘steal the show’ seems to have vanished, thereby reducing his goals and assists this season. Sure, he was way too Rambo last year and went for the spectacular pass far too often, but he seems to be way too safe, making him a bit average. Needs to blend it up.
What I’d like: Wenger should give him a more advanced role and Ramsey should go for the difficult passes more often. He should be able to keep delivering his tireless performances, which will certainly help his future at the club.
Possible future: Most likely the same will continue, and unless he is coached well, he might regress too.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Francis Coquelin
    Age: 22
    Status: 4th choice DM
Positives: His performance as RB and LB during the injury crisis was brilliant. He is reliable and impressed in the 8-2 match. Under good coaching, this lad can have a bright future.
Negatives: It’s Ramsey all over again, isn’t it? An inability to give the final ball and offer much on the attacking outlet leaves definite room for improvement.
What I’d like: His progress is encouraging, and I hope that it’s continued, along with more chances in the starting line-up.
Possible future: He will continue to be not given enough chances, resulting in a move away from the club.
    My verdict: As You Were.

    Name: Emmanuel Frimpong
    Age: 21
Status: DM, on loan at Fulham
Positives: His love for the club and his spites with Nasri made him an instant fan favourite. He impressed earlier in last season too, and seems to be a promising talent.
Negatives: His cocky and arrogant attitude reminds me of Szczesny. Isn’t a professional, and his aggression puts him into hot water.
What I’d like: It would be great if he realizes his potential at Arsenal, but I don’t think that will happen.
    Possible future:Same as Coquelin.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    Name: Denilson
    Age: 25
Status: DM, on loan at Sao Paulo.
    Positives: Er… um… eh… well.
Negatives: It’s infuriating how he passes the ball sideways and ‘plays’ with no commitment. This guy was preferred to Xabi Alonso?
    What I’d like: Get out!
Possible future:Probably another loan spell at Sao Paulo.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    Name: Santi Cazorla
    Age: 29
Status: 1st choice, AM, recently played on the left.
Positives: An absolute steal at 15m, Cazorla is no doubt Arsenal’s best player thus far in the season. His creativity and flair reminisces of Cesc Fabregas, and his rare two-footed ability brings a genuine unpredictability to the Arsenal attack. One of the few better buys by Wenger in recent seasons.
Negatives: It has to be noted that a chunk of the Spaniard’s goals and assists have come from poor sides in the EPL like Villa and Reading. He fails to show up in the big games and is a bit inconsistent. Not expected from the replacement of Fabregas.
What I’d like: He should improve in the taking of set-pieces and corners and show up in the big games. In short, BETTER COACHING.
Possible future:He’ll keep a starting berth in the line-up, though I have a fear of him regressing if overplayed and poorly coached.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Jack Wilshere
    Age: 21
    Status: 2nd choice AM
Positives: Arsenal through and through, sacrificing his heart and soul for 3 points. His frequent dashing runs in the box and his desire for the ball and commitment makes him an exciting prospect.
Negatives: A bit predictable this year and has become injury prone (100% down to Wenger). A slightly overrated midfielder who hasn’t performed to the expected level. Wenger should give Cazorla the role of playing behind Ollie instead of Jack.
What I’d like: Wilshere needs to up his tempo next season, or he will be in danger of regressing next season. Wenger is overplaying him and screwing up his fitness, not to mention surrounding him with mediocre players. Whatever he says about Arsenal, I’m sure he’ll smell the coffee in 2 to 3 years and leave like Cesc. MATCH HIS AMBITION, ARSENE!
Possible future:Injuries will take his toll on him next season, and he might as well leave the club in a couple of years.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Tomas Rosicky
    Age: 33
    Status: 3rd choice AM
Positives: A popular player who is 100% committed to the club and gives his all. Rosicky is not scared to give forward passes and increase the chances. His enthusiasm and energy is infectious. An experienced veteran.
Negatives: Though his style of play certainly suits Arsenal, we are paying a ridiculous amount of wage to a player who plays for less than half of a season(close to 80,000). We certainly can’t afford to keep such an old player who is on the sidelines for a huge chunk of the season.
What I’d like: I’d love it if he were much fitter, but I know that’s not going to happen. He needs to leave, or sort out his injury problems.
Possible future:He might leave next season, or stay and contribute in the second half of the next season.
    My verdict: Ship Out.

    FORWARDS
    Name: Theo Walcott
    Age: 24
Status: 1st choice right winger, sometimes ST
Positives: His blistering pace and direct approach is a threat to defenders. Had a breakthrough season, scoring 20+ goals for the club. Signed a contract with the club, temporarily ending speculation of him leaving.
Negatives: Did NOT progress at the pace that the club expected. His predictable play is increasingly frustrating. He has no other special trait apart from his speed. Fizzed out completely in the second part of the season, the crucial part. Theo wanted to leave the club, but didn’t because he realized that no other top club were genuinely interested in him. He also knew that he would have no chance to play at the regularity he plays at Arsenal at any other top club. This can be seen when he half-heartedly signed only a 3 year deal with the club, and not a 5 year deal. With good coaching, Walcott can be a professional player.
What I’d like: In the Jan transfer window, Walcott symbolized a world class player (though he was not). Wenger could not afford to sell him and folded in the end, which was actually a good move. With proper attention, Walcott has a potential of turning into someone special, and prove that his 12m transfer fee and 100,000 wages weren’t a joke.
Possible future:With poor coaching, he will turn into the same old frustrating self, and he’ll leave the club in a couple of years though not being sorely missed.
    My verdict: Shape Up.

    Name: Lukas Podolski
    Age: 28
